Jules Paymer Joins Forces with Miki Ratsula for Emotional The Daughter That My Mother Wanted"

Publish date: 2024-07-22

Whether it is getting straight A’s, working in a field your family approves of, dating a person that parents see fit etc., many of us have these high expectations we are anticipated to achieve. It is not always easy for a parent to let go of what they want for their child, but children have certain wants and needs of their own. Artist on the rise Jules Paymer teams up with acclaimed talent Miki Ratsula on a song that expresses exactly that. “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted” details the difficulties that can come with being non-binary. It examines the idea of desperately trying to fit in while also longing to just be yourself. Both non-binary themselves, Paymer and Ratsula understand this struggle all too well.

The video perfectly represents the track’s powerful message. In the piece the two hauntingly sing of their younger years when they attempted to mask their identity. “Bet her parents tell her they are proud. I don’t ever really hear that now.” These moving lyrics show how they had to hide who they really are in order to feel accepted. The visuals display that concept beautifully. The shot of a younger Miki dreaming of trying on her brother’s clothes along with images like Jules cutting off their hair are powerful representations of the daily hardships they face.

Los Angeles native Jules Paymer was drawn to music from an early age. At just 7 they were already playing bass in a garage band. Then at age 9 they took up guitar and piano writing full songs. Now they craft bold music that is highly authentic and vulnerable. Together with Miki Ratsula, the pair have created a poignant offering for anyone who has dealt with the exhausting task of living up to others’ standards.
