Powerball $40 million: Wentworth NSW syndicate hits jackpot

Publish date: 2024-07-11

A tiny town on the NSW-Victorian border has instantly become home to 10 new multimillionaires after a syndicate pocketed Thursday night’s $40 million Powerball prize.

The 10 players were all residents of Wentworth, a town with a population of just over 1500 which lies on the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers.

The syndicate held the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1424 on Thursday – and in addition to scoring division one, the syndicate’s PowerHit entry also scored division two 19 times, division eight four times and division nine, bolstering the group’s total windfall to $40,517,739.00

It means each member of the syndicate took home a share worth $4,051,773.90.

Shares into the winning syndicate, called Syndicate 1, were sold at Wentworth Lotto and News.

But while the incredible win is no doubt the talk of the town today, it is believed some members of the winning syndicate may have yet to realise their good fortune, prompting lottery officials to urge players to check their tickets as soon as possible.

When an official from The Lott reached out to one of the winning syndicate members on Thursday night, the local resident said she was stunned.

“I just had a look! I can’t believe it!” she said.

“That’s really good! We’re only a small town and it’s crazy to think there’s now 10 multimillionaires here.”

Wentworth Lotto and News owner Rowan Congress said she was shocked but thrilled the big jackpot had landed in her small town.

“Oh, that’s beautiful,” she said after being informed of the win.

“That’s great news for Wentworth. We’re in the middle of nowhere.

“We’ve only been here for two years and this is the first division one win we’ve sold. How great that it’s a syndicate and lots of people get to share the prize.”

The Lott spokesman Matt Hart said some syndicate members held unregistered entries and might have yet to discover their winning news.

“While we’ll be reaching out to those syndicate members who registered their entries, there are a handful of people with unregistered entries who may not yet know they’re part of this winning group,” he said.
